Rescue 3 Operational Level

Swiftwater First Responder

This two day course mixes classroom based learning with practical in-water exercises.

Students are trained in hazard recognition, equipment use, and basic shore and boat-based rescue techniques, as well as a wide variety of other skills.

Course Objectives:

· To develop the awareness, confidence and skills necessary for personal safety and survival around a swiftwater environment

· To train students in the application of skill, tools and standard rescue equipment that may be used under the direction of specialist technicians

· To examine some of the safety and management issues related to swiftwater incidents

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the course the student should:

· Understand Rescue 3’s principles and philosophy of water-based rescue.

· Understand key personal safety and survival issues.

· Have a basic appreciation of generic swiftwater hazards

· Have a good working knowledge of appropriate PPE

· Be able to carry out shallow water crossings and wading rescues.

· Have an awareness of the key medical and health issues related to working in and around water.

· Be able to deploy a throw line effectively.

After completing the course, certified personnel may participate in higher risk, technical water rescues under the supervision of Technician Level rescuers.
